Progress of my 59 Karmann Cabriolet.

A dirty stripper.

This is my bug how I bought it in 1998 for £1000 ("for that pile of scrap???" you might ask). The cab was in a horrific state, the bottom 3 inches all around need replacing. It had been torn apart where the bolts had rusted and the hood was missing, although a frame was present. In fact most of the parts were there exept most were in a box. We were told it was a 59' though it came with a B plate which would make it 61'. The chassis number was missing (yup, I said missing) though the Karmann body number was still intact (00000000000?).

In The Beginning!!

As I started to strip the paint off the body I found a LOT of filler, 3/4" in places. I also discovered that the semiphore holes had been filled and welded at one side while the whole panel had been replaced at the other. The reason for this we now believe to be that it was in a major crash in the early 60's and taken off the road. The car must have been rebuilt using later (post 59) parts, hence the rear panel had no semiphore hole, and then re-registered as a B plate. The car has been modernised in other ways too. The bumpers are incorrect for a 59' model, wrong handles, catches etc and the colour had changed from Black to Red.
